My 2015 Word of the Year

Every year around this time I choose a "Word of the Year." 

In 2012 I chose the word patience. I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere in life and decided to just enjoy the season I was in and wait in patience for the future.

 In 2013 that word was trust,, I had no clue that just 3 months into that year I would meet my future husband. I knew that it was the right decision to marry Colten, and I trusted that it was God's plan for us to get engaged just 8 weeks after meeting. I've seen so many blessings from saying yes that night.

 In 2014 I chose the word fearless. I graduated cosmetology school, a choice that many disagreed with. We decided to buy a house at 21 & 23 years old, which was a SCARY huge commitment for me. We got a dog, which was really scary for someone who has always been a little afraid of dogs, and now he is the love of my life.

Now we are on the brink of 2015, and I've chosen a new word... NOURISH.

I want to nourish myself physically by learning to eat healthier. I'm not familiar with many healthy foods, and there are many I don't like. But I want to take this year training my body to want the junk food less, and want the earth foods more.

I want to nourish myself spiritually by spending time in the scriptures every single day all by myself. I've seen the blessings of scripture study and want to keep myself spiritually nourished every single day. 

I want to nourish myself emotionally by saying "No" to unnecessary crazy. I will speak kind words to myself, and celebrate small successes. 

I want to nourish myself mentally by starting school again, and completing my associates degree in May.

Sundays

I love Sundays. I love how refreshing and relaxing they are. 

Going to church, partaking of the sacrament, and just being with people who believe as I do and are striving for the same things I am is the best part of my week. It's basically like regrouping. When I go I feel better about myself. I'm reminded of my worth, and of all the good I can do. 

I hope you spend today with people you love. I hope you all had a very merry Christmas. And I hope you're all pondering your 2015 New Year's Resolutions.

5 Ways to Grow In Your Faith

5 Ways to Grow closer in Your Faith


use your alone time productively | I know I know, free alone time is beyond rare in life, especially if you are married or have kids! But I'm talking about things we do every day that we really can't multitask with other activities. For example, if you take a walk with your dog in the morning, use this as your time be in meditation with God and discern where he is leading you in life. Like to sing in the shower? Learn a hymn or a new song of praise and lift your voice to God. Your morning commute could also be used for time to build your relationship with Christ. I mean, let's be honest, there's hardly any music on the radio in the morning, and most talk shows are terrible. Take that time to be silent, listen or pray. Another great thing to do is to use this time to listen to a sermon you may have missed, or podcast of an author speaking on the scriptures or another Christian book.

pray without ceasing | Scripture tells us to pray continually, and give thanks for all things, but we often contain our prayers to before meals with family, or before bedtime with our heads bowed and eyes closed. Obviously we can't maintain this posture all day long, however we certainly can be in prayer! There is a something that has been dubbed "breath prayers" and let me tell it's changed my life! Every moment and each interaction can be a prayer. We can pray even when others don't need to know that we're praying, like at work or at school. These "breath prayers" can be simply a thank you for something that happened or one sentence lifting a person up in prayer. See someone on your commute that looks like they need assistance? Say a prayer. Coworker having a bad day? Say a small prayer for them. Nothing is too small for us to lift to God. Open your eyes to the world around you and I promise you'll find more than your imagined to pray for!

commit scripture to memory | Now I'm not necessarily talking about  bible sword drills and competition in Sunday School, but what we commit to memory stays with us and comes out. Write on your mirror in your bathroom (with a dry erase marker!) or use a notecard or chalkboard, and write a verse of scripture. Every morning when you're getting ready for the day, and every evening when you're getting ready for bed, read the verse to yourself and try to memorize it. Another great place for memory verses are in your agenda/planner that you keep, on the fridge, at your desk, in your locker. You get the idea. Focus on a verse per week.

use technology to your advantage | These days the older generation tends to want to write off technology when it comes to your faith, and solely focus on stepping away from phones, TV, etc as ways to grow in your faith. But let's be realistic - we can't spend every day alone in a cabin in the woods diving into scripture. But we can be smarter about how we engage with technology. Set an alarm on your phone to have a specific time during the day when you read the scriptures and dive into the word. Be in prayer when that alarm goes off and step aside to a quiet place even if it's just for five minutes. Another great thing with technology is to use items on the go. The have apps that have the entire Bible and several options for daily devotions. One example is She Reads Truth, a website and now a great app for community for women.


be in community | If there's one thing I've learned, it's that we can't do it alone! Find a friend and keep each other accountable. Join a small group of ladies you know and meet for lunch weekly, monthly, whatever. Create a Facebook group with like minded ladies and keep up with each other via the internet. Use a phone, group text, just be in community, it will change you.

The Best & Worst Marriage Advice I've Ever Recieved

When I got engaged it seemed like everyone had advice for me. Some was good and some was... not so good. So today I'm sharing the best & worst pieces of marriage advice I've received.



BEST

1. Be grateful you have someone to clean up after.
I'm grateful I have someone to do the dishes for. I'm grateful I get to fold his clean clothes, and take out the trash occassionally. How luck am I to have someone so amazing to clean up after?

2. Be unselfish.
I don't think I realized my selfish tendencies until I got married. I always considered myself a giving, loving, self-less person, but getting married showed me how much work I have to do. Putting Colten above me is a learning process, I'm not perfect, but I'm truly happier when I choose to make him happy.

3. Make date night a priority. 
We used to do date night just whenever we "had time". Then we realized even as a newlywed couple without kids, you don't just have time to go out, you have to MAKE time. Now every Thursday night with few exceptions we go on a date, and those precious moments alone with him, both of us disconnected from electronics are my favorite moments of the entire week.

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you see hair that won't grow, extra weight that needs to come off, and breakouts for days? Some days I see myself like that. Which led myself to a Monday melt down. "I just want to feel beautiful," I told my husband through tears. 

Of course, after he calmed me down & we decided what I could do about it, I didn't fall asleep quickly. I tossed & turned thinking about it. Why was I feeling so bad about myself? God wouldn't want me to feel that way about myself. I am his daughter, I bet he thinks I'm beautiful. 

In the song Beauty Is by Jenny Phillips it says...

"When you care more about living the way Christ did, 
That's when you'll know what beauty is."

I realized that that needs to be my main focus. Diving into the scriptures, praying earnestly to my Heavenly Father & setting goals that can help me be like Christ.

I'm still working on myself physically, you'll see that in my weekly fitness updates here. But I'm also refocusing my thoughts & actions.  I want to be more like that Savior. Because those who are truly living like the Savior, well, they shine.

How to Get Pumped For the Gym

If you're like me, you dread going to the gym. I'd much rather stay at home, drink hot chocolate, watch Bones, and do some design. I love spending my time after work just relaxing before having to go to sleep to get up for the next day. Knowing I have to take time out of my day to go run is just awful. It feels like a chore most days. I know, I know, that's bad.

But I'm here to help you get pumped for the gym, just the way I get myself pumped for the gym. And if you have any ways not mentioned that you get pumped for the gym, please feel free to share :)


Appearance. I know a lot of people feel annoyed with those who get ready for the gym, but hey if that works for you and gets you there, more power to you. For me, it's my outfit. I'm obsessed with purchasing workout clothes. I love buying new ones so I can wear them everywhere. I usually shop at Target or Walmart. I've been to Gap before but they can be expensive and usually don't have much to choose from. Nike is the best. I love that store, and it always makes me feel more motivated. Their retail is expensive but so worth the money. Check out their shoes and their clothing. Another idea you could do for clothing is check out your local running store to see if they can help measure your foot and run to find you the best shoe. It will be much better for you in the long run.

Music. I love music. So so so so much. I love buying new music and listening to it on repeat for days. But most of all, I love finding music I can work out to. I love staying pumped during a workout. I got a small iPod Shuffle for $50 from the Apple store for strictly workout music. It clips to my strap or my waistband. It's convenient and small. Just put that thing on shuffle and you're good to go. Choosing good music can really boost your motivation and your desire to continue going. When I've got a good song on that I can run or bike to the beat smoothly, I'll sometimes put it on replay. If you are looking for music to have on your playlist, there are tons of resources you can find that contain music ideas. Pinterest is one of them.

Self-prep. This is where you can do some Yoga, some stretches, some self-motivating. Speak kind words to yourself. BE NICE. It is so hard to get so worked up and judge ourselves according to those we workout by. Tell yourself it doesn't matter where you start, as long as you do. Be kind and encourage others. Have a plan of your workout can also help you stay at the gym. I know that I don't always know what to do on the circuit machines or how many sets of whatever number I should do for each weight lift. But I do it anyway. Have all of your stuff laid out the night before, or even bring your duffle bag with you so you have it in your mind all day. Make that decision so it will be easy to go instead of finding yourself sitting at home instead of going to make your body fit and healthy.


Of course we're all different, and the gym experience is different for us than someone else, but learning what can help get you pumped for the gym will make your experience there even better. I know these three things help me out a lot and I've already seen the difference it has made!

Fitness With A Dog

Starting the first week of 2015 I will be hosting a weekly fitness/healthy living link up. It will be every Friday! I will post more details about it later, but until then you will get a weekly fitness update on Mondays from moi. 


I've been thinking about how I can better incorporate fit living into my daily tasks. We got a puppy about a month ago, and he is the most adorable thing! I've set a goal to take him on 3 hour long walks every single week. Walking may not be running a marathon, but it's something! And walking around campus as a college student seemed to keep me in shape, so why not give it a try? 

Walking is SOOOOO good for you for so many reasons. Benson is still figuring out how to "go on a walk", but he will get there, and I'm excited & happy that we can do it together while I get a bit of exercise in!



I'm also getting Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred for Christmas! (I picked it out for myself) I am going to be starting that up in January if anyone is interested in joining my husband & I. I've read so many great review & seen some amazing results and I'm ready to try it for myself. 

So for the next few weeks I'll keep going on #6weekstofab & walking Benson & then you'll start to see 30 Day Shred updates as well. I can't wait for all that we have in store for you!

3 Books Every Newlywed Should Read

When I was engaged, I read everything about marriage I could get my hands on. I knew I wanted to be married & I wanted to be as prepared as possible to have the best marriage possible.



So here's 3 books I think every newlywed should read.

I'm not 100% for boxing people into specific "personality types" but there is too much truth behind the 5 love languages for me to deny it. We took the online quiz early on in our marriage & it really helped me understand how to show Colten my appreciation & love for him even better.

Lots of marriage books say to read the book together & to work together on your marriage, and while my husband has always been open to my hair-brained ideas about improving our marriage, not all husbands are. And sometimes I just don't want to bore him. I love that this book is all about improving yourself & improving your relationship all by yourself. 

This book has a Christian perspective on marriage and hits all the hot topics you encounter during your first year of marriage. This book focuses on not just not getting divorced, but also on how to make your marriage your happiest relationship.

5 Ways Anyone Can Give Back

4. Visit a nursing home
This Christmas season can be especially hard on the elderly men and women whose family often doesn't have time to visit. Call ahead and ask if you can visit, or better yet, ask if you can come caroling!

5. Donate
If you have old clothes that don't fit anymore, give them to Goodwill or a family in need if you know one. Save your shampoos and soaps from hotel stays and donate them to a local homeless shelter.

Tips for Avoiding the Comparison Trap

hi i'm aubrey from dreaming about someday. i've been around here before, and i'm excited to be back.

i love social media, but sometimes it gets a bit of a bad reputation. it's great for keeping in touch with friends, connecting with people, communication, and many other great things, but there is also the potential to compare yourself/your life to what you see on the screen. it's easy to see what other people have/what they're doing/how they look and get jealous/sad/mad. we all know the feeling. it's pretty miserable so here are my tips for avoiding the comparison trap.

1. keep a written list of all the great things about your life

when you find yourself wishing you had what someone else has, a list helps you feel happy about what you do have.

2. set goals 

it's hard to be jealous of others when you are busy celebrating your own achievements.

3. be kind to yourself

appreciate what you do have and how hard you worked to get what you have

it takes a little effort, but we really can be perfectly happy with the life we have.

How I Got Started Blogging

When I was entering my sophomore year, I had notebooks on notebooks full of uplifting quotes and stories. I guess you could say I collected them. When I heard about blogging as an online opportunity to record stories from your life I knew that this might be a better option than collecting hundreds of notebook.



That's how I got started blogging! I started out posting sporadically when I cam across things that I wanted to save. Eventually, random bloggers started commenting on my blog, I'd click on their profile, see who they were following, and blog stalk away.

Then I found out people got free clothes for blogging! And some people made money from blogging! I loved sharing my thoughts and stories with strangers, it was fun and liberating. It was a snowball effect that slowly led through 3 blog names and brought me here.

Blogging is one of my favorite hobbies, and I'm so grateful for all the relationships that it has brought me to, especially how it led me to my husband! Read that story HERE.

If I Could Buy Motivation...

Yesterday I joked to my husband that if I could buy motivation I would. As you know, I started #6weekstofab last Sunday as an effort to improve myself physically. I did really well 3 days in a row and then I just got lazy and quit. So today I finished Day 4 out of 6 for week one. So now I'm behind, but I'm not giving up. 

I saw this PIN on Pinterest that says, "It's a slow process, don't make it slower by quitting."

Christ-Centered Life During the Holidays

Since Thanksgiving has ended, and Black Friday haunted us, me, I have spent quite a bit of time thinking about Christmas, people, and the meaning of Christmas.
You guys, people are insane. People are absolutely crazy. At one point, I was scared for my life. And it was in the mall. I totally understand that people are trying to get things ready for Christmas, trying to get the perfect gifts, and trying to get the best deals. But I truly think people, including myself, lose sight of the importance of it all. That’s why this year, I decided to make a list of things I am going to actively strive to think about and do in order to keep a Christ-centered life, ESPECIALLY during the holidays.
1.       Calm down on the decorating
When I asked my friends about this, they agreed. I’m not the only crazy one. I get so obsessed with Christmas. I feel like I have to have every aspect of my life decorated. My house smelling amazing 24/7, Christmas lights everywhere, and the perfect Christmas wreath, all of it had to be perfect. It’s funny, because this year, I put just a few things up to help my husband and I focus on one thing: Christ. The crazy decorations are fun, but not always necessary. Especially when we get carried away in what image our house is displaying versus what image we need to focus on throughout the holiday season.
2.       Spread Holiday Cheer 
Lately, when I’m at the store, I notice every single person there is super cranky. Traffic sucks, YES. Lots of people can suck, YES. But don’t let it ruin your experience this year because of other people. I always find it fun to serve others. Get your neighbors gifts, do something nice for someone! You don’t have to make a lot of money to serve somebody. It can always be small & simple things.
3.       Holiday Date Nights

Every year, my husband and I have some fun date nights planned centered around Christ. Some of these include going to see nativities, going to look at the lights at temple square, and even at-home date nights that allow us to learn more about Christ.

4. Lastly, in order to keep a Christ-Centered Life during the holidays, we must think of the Savior more than ever.
I truly believe it is important for us to put away the distractions, and gain a closer relationship with our Heavenly Father.  That is what it is all about. This list is short, but very simple. Focus on Christ, and your holidays will be perfect. The inpatient crazy people at the store will no longer bother you, and instead, you will make an impact on others with your attitude.

The #1 Thing I Learned My First Year of Marriage

A lot of people say that the first year of marriage was the hardest, if so, we were lucky. Our first year didn't seem that hard at all. In fact, the 5 months of long distance were a lot harder than being married if you ask me. 

I'm not naive enough to believe that's the norm. I don't believe everyone's first year is easy. I don't believe everyone's first year is hard. Why? Because everyone's marriage is different.


That's the #1 thing I learned during my first year of marriage. That my marriage isn't my parents marriage, or his parents marriage. Our marriage isn't the same as his co-workers or as my friend's marriage, even though she got married just over a month after me. Every single marriage is different.

Some couples cuddle and hold hands a lot, some don't. Some couples fight and bicker often, some don't. In some couples one works while the other goes to school, and some need both persons to work to provide. 

I'm not saying we should toss out all marriage advice we are given. People who have been married 50 years know a heck of a lot more about marriage than I do, and some pieces of marriage advice are solid truths. Gottman's ratio has been proven over and over. Date night makes for happier marriages. But the way my sister and her husband interact is very different from the way my husband and I interact, and that doesn't make either of our marriages bad. They are just different. 

Your marriage might not look like someone else's. A friend from high school is CONSTANTLY posting photos of all the cute things her husband does for her, right now, my husband doesn't even have time to do those kinds of things. Between full-time work, full-time school and lots of things that need fixing in our new house, he's busy from sun up to sun down. But I'd rather him fix the broken water heater than make a puzzle love note for me. That doesn't make my friend's husband lazy or worthless, it just makes them different. It means we are in different phases. It means we are our own marriage and no one else's. 

The #1 thing I learned in my first year of marriage is that no one's marriage is the same. Having a hard first year or an easy first year doesn't necessarily set you up for success or failure in the future. It's just a year of 2 people learning to combine finances, manage time, stress, sex and all the other crazy but wonderful things that come with marriage. My marriage is not your marriage. I might inspire yours, and you might inspire mine, but we will never have identical marriages. And for that, I'm grateful, because how boring would the world be if everybody was exactly the same?

Christmas is almost here!

Man, it seems like it was just December 26th and I was mourning the end of the Christmas season, yet somehow, it's here again! We have yet to put up our tree, but we plan to do that today hopefully. Ya know, when your water heater breaks and your car is leaking gas, husband has higher priorities than setting up the Christmas tree.

Despite all the things that have gone wrong since moving into our house, we feel so blessed. And Benson & the cats love having a ton of room to blow around the house. How cute is this headband from Kabat And Co?  Wearing it today make me want to watch The Santa Clause and cuddle up with my husband. 

Kabat & Co also sells pillows, this one and this one would totally match our new bedspread! I love all their headbands though. I love that if you're having a bad hair day you can throw one on and look fabulous! I'm eying this Mustard & Lace one, this Houndstooth one, and this polka dot one!
